Starting a food truck might sound out of reach when you barely have money for groceries. For Thaddeus and his wife, that was pretty close to where they started. After losing their jobs and nearly everything they owned, they ended up living in a hotel, using a rented U-Haul as their family car, and selling plates of food just to make some money.

Eventually, The Bells took a Greyhound to Dallas with only $40. His wife was pregnant, they were sleeping on a cousin’s apartment floor, and there wasn’t much of a backup plan. So they cooked. They sold plates and desserts at barbershops and salons, sometimes one customer at a time. Just 5 1⁄2 weeks later, they had saved $3,000 and moved into their first apartment.

They kept building from there: a homemade barbecue trailer, a $900 van with no AC, and finally a $7,000 food truck they paid for in cash. That truck brought in $546,000 in its first year while they worked just 3-4 days a week. What started with $40 eventually became a real food truck business, showing just how far you can go when you start with what you have and keep showing up.

In this episode, The Bells share what it really took to build their business, the mistakes that cost them thousands, and how social media helped bring customers to their food.
