Stories about punk music tend to picture thin-framed white guys and girls with shaved heads, part of an angry, energetic scene born out of the working class angst of young white England in the 1970s. But the actual history of punk – as a type of music and movement – is more complicated than that.
Black punks have been an integral and pioneering part of punk history – and they're keeping the movement alive and growing today. Host Sana Saeed explores that history and talks to proto-punk band Death, musician and journalist Greg Tate, the band The 1865 and festival organizer Shawna Shawnté.

For most people, working for a game developer likely sounds pretty cool. You get to bring the games that gave you so much joy to millions of people around the world. But, while the job looks fun from the outside, in reality, being a game developer is actually quite rough. For one, game companies are usually able to get away with paying game developers significantly less than market wages. Similarly, game developers generally end up working quite a bit more than traditional software engineers. This can mostly be explained by the fact that most people who become game developers do it out of passion. So, game companies are able to abuse this passion to milk out the most amount of work. This situation is only made worse by the fact that game development skills aren’t easily transferable to traditional tech companies. So, many developers often end up getting trapped within the gaming industry. This video explains the pros and cons of being a game developer and how game developers end up getting ripped off by game companies.

In this full-length interview, one of the greatest R&B singer/songwriters of all time, Smokey Robinson, details his upbringing in Detroit, where he lived in a packed house. He spoke about being one of 11 kids in the house, most of whom were his nieces and nephews who, due to closeness in age, were more like his siblings. He also discussed his father’s journey out of Selma, Alabama, into Detroit after stabbing a white kid who bullied him for years and fleeing town at only 12 years old. Moving along, the legendary R&B singer recalls starting a vocal group in elementary school and later forming his first official band, The Five Chimes. He goes on to explain what inspired the group's inception before saying that they eventually evolved into The Miracles. As the discussion continues, he talks about growing up with a young Diana Ross and Aretha Franklin as his childhood neighbors.Later, Smokey Robinson talks about growing up in Detroit when many of his friends were dabbling in criminal mischief and gang activity. He also talks about the experience of his former group, The Matadors, auditioning for Jackie Wilson's manager. The Motown legend explains that although the audition didn't go for the group, it served as his personal introduction to Barry Gordy, Jackie Wilson's primary songwriter. As the conversation nears an end, he looks back on the first time he retired, the events leading up to recording his first album, being the Vice President of Motown Records. He also shares his thoughts on Michael Jackson's early releases as a solo artist before touching on his friendship with the late Rick James and the tragic murder of Marvin Gaye.

Music can transport you, even or especially when the destination's unknown. For 22 minutes, this is what Jeff Parker's Tiny Desk with the ETA IVtet can offer: a space for your mind to meditate on what the music speaks, set to a gossamer groove.
Even though Parker is in the group's name, equality runs the show: a quiet drone sets the tone, then the music is completely improvised. Stillness, followed by reflection and response. Josh Johnson, an alto saxophonist with a quiet-yet-commanding sense of effects, builds little worlds out of loops and fluttering melody. Jay Bellerose, a drummer who's worked with the likes of Allen Toussaint and Suzanne Vega, is painterly in his brush and stick work, but bursts with a sun-beamed drum fill when the moment calls. Anna Butterss performed next to Jenny Lewis for her Tiny Desk in early 2020; here, the bassist both provides a grounding presence and the basis for liftoff. Parker — an immediately recognizable, yet malleable guitarist known for his time in Tortoise, the Chicago Underground and a CV far too long to list here — plays with repetition until melodic figures reveal themselves. Informed by the members' backgrounds in jazz, ambient, funk, rock, electronic and minimalist music, the band's mystical approach to improvisation never bends to one sound at a time.
Andie Huether, our audio technical director for this concert, dug into NPR's equipment archives and set out a Nagra IV tape recorder on the Desk as a nod to engineer Bryce Gonzales, who developed a live mixing and recording rig with a similar unit for the band's sets at the now-closed ETA club in Los Angeles. "In the days before portable digital recorders," Huether explains, "NPR reporters and engineers would take machines like this one into the field to capture reporting and bring (or ship) the resultant tapes back to HQ to be edited and incorporated into our broadcasts." We didn't record this Tiny Desk analog, but the spirit remains: a conversation captured in small space, one worth watching — and hearing — over and over again.

Lyrics:
You’re my cherry pie
I don’t care who knows it
Love me till I die
Bury me with roses
I know you’re awfully shy
But I can’t wait to hold it to hold that
Your big big hard heart!
With Open arms
Holding you naked
Middle of sunset
Boulevard
Making you famous
Everyone’s watching
Bare skin concrete
Their calling the police
Open arms
Holding you naked
Middle of sunset
Feels so good it hurts
But u fill up what’s broken
Women of few words
But for you I keep my mouth wide open
Praying and hoping
That ya quench my thirst
Not just dip your toes in
I want that
Big, big, hard heart!
With open arms
Holding you naked
Middle of sunset
Boulevard
Making you famous
Everyone’s watching
Bare skin concrete
Their calling the police
Open arms
Holding you naked
Middle of sunset
I just wanna touch it touch it
Try your hardest not to bust it
Gimme gimme love it love it
Hey hey hey
I just wanna touch it touch it
Try your hardest not to bust it
Gimme gimme how I love ur
Big big heart
With open arms
Holding you naked
Middle of sunset
Boulevard
Making you famous
Everyone’s watching
Bare skin concrete
Their calling the police
Open arms
Holding you naked
Middle of sunset
