If you have low testosterone levels but no symptoms, low testosterone treatment isn't recommended. Only men with symptoms of low testosterone and blood levels that confirm this as the cause of symptoms should consider testosterone replacement. Your healthcare provider should monitor your blood pressure while you are being treated with JATENZO. (Testosterone levels under 20 ng/dL in women 50 and older are typically considered low.) It’s also important to check sex hormone binding globulin, or SHBG, because if it’s high, "any exogenous testosterone we give someone is just going to be bound up," she says.
Most side effects are reversible if you stop taking the drugs, but others may be permanent. Non-athlete weightlifters (bodybuilders) typically misuse them to improve their appearance. This is considered an off-label, or non-FDA-approved, use of the medication. They’re manufactured drugs that closely resemble cortisol, a hormone that your adrenal glands produce naturally. General steroids, called corticosteroids, are medications that reduce inflammation and the activity of your immune system. Some athletes, bodybuilders and others misuse these drugs in an attempt to enhance performance and/or improve their physical appearance.
The symptoms of low testosterone are sometimes obvious, but they also can be subtle. There don't seem to be any benefits for women as far as energy, mood, or bone health. In other countries, testosterone is given to women off-label, usually at one-tenth the dose given to men. A synthetic testosterone for women is only licensed in Australia. Women and people assigned female at birth do produce testosterone as well as estrogen, though the amounts of testosterone are much smaller than those produced by men. Testosterone levels are highest in men around age 17 and drop as they age, starting between ages 30 and 40. Women who've taken testosterone usually report an increase in sexual desire. Testosterone does decline in women as they age, especially after menopause, but most of the time, TRT is not needed. Most of the testosterone is produced in the ovaries. It's natural for testosterone to decline as you age and not necessarily a reason for TRT.
Your provider will let you know how often you need to do this. If you stop TRT, you’ll return to your normal level of testosterone. It may take a few weeks before you start noticing differences in your body and mood once starting TRT.
On treatment, the body stops making testosterone. If a man's testosterone is below the normal range, it's best to repeat it once more to be sure before starting testosterone therapy - often staying on it indefinitely. A nurse or technician will draw blood from a vein in your arm and collect it in a small test tube. Especially in older men, you'll want to have your level taken in the morning because a decline is more noticeable if blood is drawn at that time. Testosterone levels are highest at 8 a.m. Your levels go up and down during the day. Once your results come back, your doctor may order other tests to rule out other reasons for your low T levels. You might confuse low testosterone (low T) with erectile dysfunction. By age 70, the average man's testosterone is 30% below its peak, but it's usually still within the normal range.
